Benin August Travel

Early on in August I will be traveling to Benin to train people there and from around French speaking Africa how to work with TV stations and get programming on the air. I thought that it might be interesting to some to have a preview of some things about this country, about which very few in the West know anything.

I will also likely be meeting with TV executives and government officials - so stay tuned!

BENIN - pre-trip thoughts

It is home to 7.1 million people in Africa's west, formerly known as Dahomey.

The Media

Benin has 50+ newspapers and periodicals, one state TV channel, a few commercial TV channels and more than 30 state, commercial and local radio stations.

According to the BBC, the current president, Yayi Boni was elected with 74% of the vote in March 2006. He was born in 1952 into a Muslim family in the conntry's north and later became an evangelical Christian.
